I. Visible Learning for Mathematics: What works best to optimize student learning (Hattie, J., Fisher, D., & Frey, N. 2017). (Allison Peet)
a. Intended Outcome: Identify instructional strategies that will best support students’ surface, deep, and transfer learning, while considering where students are in the learning process.
· What is visible learning?
· How do learning intentions and success criteria provide clarity to students?
· What are surface, deep, and transfer learning; and where do they live in instruction?
b. Develop and connect instructional strategies for surface, deep, and transfer learning as they
II. “I Can” Statements and Unpacking Documents
a. Intended Outcome: Consider how to support teacher understanding of the NYS NGLS-M through an “unpacking” process. How can we apply what we now know about surface, deep, and transfer learning?

Our agenda will include an introduction to the Cultural Education Center, the NYS Museum, the NYS Archives, and the NYS Library. We will also hear updates directly from our NYSED Social Studies colleagues. Finally, we will reconvene our work groups.
The street address for our meeting is 222 Madison Avenue, Albany, NY 12230. There is no street number visible on the building, so look for the wide building with a flat roof that is on the south end of the Empire State Plaza. The Capitol building is on the opposite end of the plaza. We recommend car pooling when possible. There are lots on either side of the building (Cathedral and Madison). There is also a V-LOT (visitor lot) under the Empire State Plaza.

October 10-11, 2018 at Capital Region BOCES
Ted Willard is a Program Director for NSTA. In that role, he oversees the COMPASS Project which is an effort to support teachers in implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Prior to joining NSTA this winter, Ted spent 12 years at Project 2061. There he was responsible for the development of the growth-of-understanding maps published in Atlas of Science Literacy, Volume 2.
